Acoustic and Perceptual Characteristics of Reduced Vowels Produced by Speakers of English as a Foreign Language
نویسنده
چکیده
This article analyzes the process of vowel reduction in function words by Brazilian speakers of English as a Foreign Language. It compares information obtained by perceptual verification with those obtained by acoustic verification. The sample is composed by sixteen female speakers of English as a FL and one native speaker of English. Data collection was accomplished through an instrument composed by sixty affirmative sentences containing the function words at, for, from, of and to. The data were analyzed both perceptually and acoustically. It was found that speech rate, measured by the duration of each sentence, vowel duration and speech register were relevant linguistic factors for the perception and production of reduced vowels.

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملProducing American English vowels during vocal tract growth: a perceptual categorization study of synthesized vowels.
PURPOSE To consider interactions of vocal tract change with growth and perceived output patterns across development, the influence of nonuniform vocal tract growth on the ability to reach acoustic-perceptual targets for English vowels was studied. METHOD Thirty-seven American English speakers participated in a perceptual categorization experiment. For the experiment, an articulatory-to-acoust...
متن کاملAcoustical analysis of Spanish vowels produced by laryngectomized subjects.
The purpose of this study was to describe the acoustic characteristics of Spanish vowels in subjects who had undergone a total laryngectomy and to compare the results with those obtained in a control group of subjects who spoke normally. Our results are discussed in relation to those obtained in previous studies with English-speaking laryngectomized patients. The comparison between English and ...
متن کاملStudy of acoustic correlates of English lexical stress produced by native (L1) bengali speakers compared to native (L1) English speakers
English lexical stress is multidimensional in nature and acoustically related to combination of fundamental frequency (F0), duration, intensity and vowel quality. Errors in any or all of these correlates could interfere with perception of the stress contrast, but it is unknown which correlates are most difficult for Bengali speakers to acquire. This study compares the use of these correlates in...
